Nuclear power investment in Chinese “12th five years plan” won’t change for Japanese’s nuclear issue.

Report from China Agricultural Bank(ABChina) said on 21st of March:” the Japanese nuclear leakage will help advance on Chinese nuclear safety, the impulsion in some parts of China will be limited. However China will not stop its investment on nuclear power in its 12th Five Years Plan, eventually the Chinese nuclear power development will be stronger and moderate.”

From the national energy meeting in 2011, the nuclear power operation capacity was designed to reach 86million KW by the 2020, according to updated information, the total operation capacity including the new nuclear power plants under approving will be 226million KW in fact. The above report from ABChina said there are mainly three reasons determines that China will not stop its investment on nuclear power in the” 12th Five Plans”:

  1. Being in a growing period of high industrialization and urbanization, China needs big demand of energy. Nuclear power has its unique advantage either for its competitive cost or its wide development space.
  2. China has promised to cut 40-50% of carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP till 2020, face to a high demand of energy, to raise the non-carbon energy in the total energy emission is very important.
  3. Hydropower, wind power and nuclear power consisted 8.7% of total energy supply in China in 2009, only 2% for nuclear power. It is far lower than the average level in developed countries( 20% in USA,70% in France)

This report also pointed out that it is an opportunity for China to prevent its future nuclear accident, encourage both central government and local government to invest more on RD of nuclear safety in order to make a unification of clean and save. Resource:www.gdcct.gov.cn
